Historical Fact Sheet
LOCATION
- The St. Anthony Hotel is located
across from historic Travis Park at 300 East Travis Street, in the heart
of downtown San Antonio. A part of the citys commercial and retail
center, the hotel is only a few blocks from the San Antonio Convention
Center, Paseo del Rio Riverwalk, Rivercenter Mall, and the Alamo.
HISTORY
- The St. Anthony, with its rich
heritage, has been designated a Texas & National Historical Landmark.
- Named after the city & a saint,
San Antonio de Padua, the St. Anthony Hotel was built in 1909 by prominent
cattlemen B.L. Naylor and A.H. Jones; the latter also mayor of San Antonio
from 1912 to 1913. Quickly earning its reputation for elegance and Old
World style, the hotel proved so successful that a second, nine-story wing
was added in 1911.
- R.W. Morrison, a railroad tycoon,
purchased the property in 1936. He was determined to make the St. Anthony
one of the nations great hotels. He was also responsible for collecting
many of the hotels French Empire antiques and built a third wing in 1941.
Original oil paintings and watercolors by such noted artists as Remington,
Cartier, and DeYoung were acquired and placed in public areas as well as
guestrooms.
- The lobby area, known as Peacock
Alley, features antique treasures and eight-foot Empire-style chandeliers.
Also gracing Peacock Alley is a painting of a mighty eagle known as
"Monarch of the Golden West" painted by James Ferdinand McCann, an Irish
artist who fell in love with Texas and settled in San Antonio.
- The landmark hotel boasts a number
of firsts. It was the first hotel to be completely and continuously
air-conditioned; first to have a drive-up, garage level registration desk;
first to use electric eye automatic opening doors; and first to install
the sophisticated Dimension telephone communications system.
- After Morrisons death in 1948,
his trustees operated the St. Anthony. In the 1960s, the hotel was again
renovated and the private St. Anthony Club and several meeting rooms were
incorporated into the existing building. In 1971, financier William Ochse
purchased and redecorated the property. The most recent full-scale
renovation was completed in early 2002.
