Does
your Congressman know�
1.
December 31st 1981 there were 3576 air traffic
controllers in the Flight Service option. By the end of 1997, the
count was down to 2368. In 1998, FAA Management told the Union, they
would maintain 3000 people in the Flight Service Option (including
management and support staff). However that number is currently down
to 2912, with only 2206 of those providing briefing/radio services.
Ask your Congressman to direct the FAA Administrator to maintain
2404 FSS controllers to provide critical briefing and radio services
to pilots.
- Flight
Service automation equipment was built in the 1970s, installed
in the 1980s and is currently outdated. New equipment is being
procured and deployed at a shamefully slow pace.
Ask your Congressman to support Flight Service efforts to
update our equipment by prioritizing funds for:
A.
OASIS � The backbone of our weather data source.
B.
Aircraft Situational Displays � to enable us to SEE
where you are in relation to developing weather systems.
C.
Interactive briefing capabilities � to allow the
briefer and the pilot to look at the same data simultaneously
and discuss it together.
D.
Improved radio and telephone system � the lifeline of
our communications.
- Pay
disparity between tower/center controllers and Flight Service
controllers has created a severe gap between the two groups�
pay scales. This is detrimental to Flight Service�s ability to
attract and retain motivated controllers.
Ask your Congressman to support pay parity for all FAA Air
Traffic Controllers.
